The Ocean Has a Door

  • A Novel
  • Magical Realism
  • Mystery
  • Psychological Fiction

Every eight years, a golden door appears somewhere in the ocean.

Nobody knows where it comes from. Nobody knows who put it there. And after all these years, nobody has figured out why it keeps coming back.

People have gone through it. They’ve come back, too.

That’s where things get strange.

They remember entire lives they never lived. People they’ve never met. Marriages that never happened. Some even remember raising children who don’t exist.

For centuries, people treated it like another story sailors told. Something you’d hear about but never expect to see yourself.

Then one day, the door appeared in the Atlantic Ocean.

That wasn’t unusual. It had happened before.

What was unusual was what happened afterward.

People who had walked through the door decades apart, some who had never even met, suddenly started remembering the same woman.

They knew her name. They remembered her face. Some claimed they’d spent years with her.

There was just one problem.

She hadn’t been born yet.

About Jacoby Mason

Behind the Stories

I’ve been writing things down for as long as I can remember. Sometimes it was something I experienced. Other times, it was a thought I couldn’t leave alone.

I’ve always been interested in people, the decisions we make, and how differently two people can see the exact same situation.

Some of those thoughts eventually became I DON’T BELONG TO FEAR, my first nonfiction book.

But not everything I think about comes from something I’ve experienced. Sometimes I get curious about things that don’t exist. Like a golden door appearing in the middle of the ocean, and what might happen if somebody walked through it.

That’s where THE OCEAN HAS A DOOR comes in.

Some stories come from what I’ve lived. Others come from what I’ve imagined.

Either way, there’s usually something I’m trying to figure out.

Letters from Jacoby

Some stories don’t make it into the books.

Occasional notes on what I’m writing, what I’m thinking about, and what’s coming next. New books, unfinished ideas, and a few things worth sharing along the way.
